Motorsport Photography
Mum has an old black & white photo somewhere of a ‘woolly bobble hat’ just visible through the back door window of a Transit van… that was me in the thick of it behind my Dad’s rally service barge! I have grown up from around 8 years old around Rally Cars one way or another. So Motorsport Photography is my natural environment.
As a rallying family, my Grandad, my Dad, me and my younger brother have all driven rally cars. So when I picked up a camera the trackside was an obvious place for me to go. I think this gives me an insight in what is going through the driver’s head. The concentration in his eyes searching out the line through the bend. The Service crew desperately trying to rebuild the car when the driver didn’t quite pick the right one!! The inevitable ‘Trying Too Hard’ marks where he couldn’t go any faster!
Journalistic Style Photography…
I like telling stories through my photography, so I am just as happy in the garages & paddock areas as I am trackside. Motorsport photography for me is not just about the cars. I want to let the viewer feel they are standing right here next to me. Trying to capture the buzz in the Pit Lane. What it’s like to be in the garage, the busy mechanics & tools. Even the smell of those huge slick tyres add to the atmosphere around the garage (wouldn’t that be cool…’scratch & sniff’ photos!!) Seeing this adrenaline filled world from the driver’s seat, the grandstands or from behind the spanners.
Tarmac or Gravel… 2 wheels or 4…
Motorsport Photography has taken me to the muddy tracks of the World Rally Championship. The beautiful chrome, brass & worn leather of Historic Motor Racing of Goodwood Revival and Members Meeting. Now recognised as the World’s largest historic motor racing festival that is Silverstone Classic. The blazing lights of midnight in Pit Lane at both Le Mans Classic & the amazing high tech machines of 24 Hours of Le Mans. Through to the iconic glamour of ‘the tunnel’ & Casino Square at the Monaco Historic Grand Prix. Not forgetting 2 wheel action of The British Superbikes.
Whichever is your chosen motorsport, if you would like me to photograph you, or your team, shooting the action. Telling the story and the people that make it special? Get in touch and let’s have a chat about turning your ideas into great photos.
