It’s quite exciting when the phone goes and I see it’s the number at Race-Used.com I never know what amazing motorsport memorabilia I’ll be photographing this time. So much motorsport history to see on every visit …

Race-Used

January is a quiet time for me with my photography. So it’s a perfect opportunity to catch up on some website housekeeping…I realised I hadn’t posted my last shoot of 2024 with the guys at Race-Used specialise in incredible pieces of Motorsport Memorabilia. Today it seemed to be F1 World Champions wherever I looked…

Incredible to see this race suit – still showing the dirt off the seat from inside the car

By definition these items were race used. I could see the dirt from Lauda’s seat on the back of the fireproofs. On the crash helmets you can see stone chips and squashed flies from the being hit in the face during the races… these items had a life of their own. So cool!!

Helmet Technology

It is amazing to see the development in racing crash helmet technology. The early helmets of James Hunt and Carlos Reutemann were heavy and looked so basic compared to the modern ones of today. These ultra lightweight carbon fibre, aero efficient versions of Charles Leclerc and George Russell seem almost space age by comparison.

Ayrton Senna

One driver that is known the world over even if you’re not into Formula One, is Ayrton Senna. It really is a a special moment when I get to touch and shoot something race used by Senna. Made even more so that there is so much video footage online these days. I stood there looking at YouTube watching this very same windscreen or wheel being driven in a grand prix, that is now in front of my camera!

There is a clip on YouTube of Ayrton Senna kicking this very wheel when it failed in the 1990 Imola Grand Prix

I couldn’t resist holding this up at eye-height to see the view Senna saw through this very windscreen going around Monaco

The Steering Wheel Club

In the 1960s and early 70s there was an exclusive members club in Mayfair. It’s membership made up by of the worlds greatest racing drivers. Around it’s walls were festooned by its own incredible memorabilia collection.

What must it have been like to walk into this club to see so many of your racing heroes at the bar?

Turning the pages of the Members Book was quite simply mind boggling. Page after page of motor racing heroes signing their membership and paying the yearly subs. Really was a motorsport encyclopaedia who’s who….
